The Museum of Fine Arts sign. It is orange and the text, in red, reads, "MFA Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg Museum & Store (the hours are too small too read) Museum Cafe (the hours are too small to read)" There is a wet street, trees, and a building in the background.

Unfortunately, it was raining and cloudy today but it was still beautiful! Desafortunadamente, estaba lloviendo y nublado hoy, ¡pero todavía era precios@!

I start Monday. Empiezo el lunes. :)

Great video from @accessart on how to change the structure and format of a sketchbook.

I’m sorry I haven’t been updating this blog lately. Lo siento que no he estado actualizando este blog últimamente.

I have been busy but I’ve been good.

Slightly personal/only related to my education updates:

Aunque se vista de seda, mona se queda.: Off to La Walgreens! ›

monasequeda:

My newest thing is to take pictures of our community trips (monthly ‘field trips’). When we get back to school I quickly upload them to the computer and print them low quality in black and white. Each child chooses a picture and writes about what was happening in it.

This helps so much! Before I would just have them write about the trip and they could never remember what we’d done.  With the visual they are able to write so much more.

That night I print the pictures at Walgreens and the next day we glue the picture with their writing.

I absolutely love  Round is a Mooncake, and so do my kids!  I read it every year as part of our writing curriculum, but I’d read it even if no required.  The illustrations are wonderful.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day and Week!

A very big thank you specifically to the dedicated folks at Bellview Elementary, who were high-spirited for the children during the lockdown yesterday.

Tennessee high school divided over "It's OK to be gay" yearbook article ›

gaywrites:

A high school yearbook staff and adviser are coming under fire for publishing a feature about a gay student in the yearbook.

The yearbook at Lenoir City High School in Tennessee ran a short piece about student Zac Mitchell’s experiences as an openly gay teen in a conservative area, under the headline “It’s OK to be gay.” After the yearbooks came out, a school board member and blogger called for a criminal investigation of the yearbook adviser for “inflicting their personal beliefs and sexual orientation decisions on impressionable students.”

According to the Associated Press, petitions are circulating for students to rip the page out of their yearbooks during graduation and even for Mitchell to be banned from going to graduation.

This actually makes me sick. The fact that it would cross someone’s mind to ban a student from walking at their high school graduation for being openly gay is completely inexcusable and indefensible. Some individuals in this area are clearly living in a different time.

art recession trailer.

Despite its hugely positive impact on our lives, art education is often one of the first programs to be cut, especially when the economy is hit hard. Art education teaches us to communicate, develops our critical thinking skills, helps us to learn other subjects, expresses our individualism, enriches our culture, builds our society, and ultimately conveys our humanity. With viable ways to save it, there is no need for this important aspect of education to disappear.
